Brief summary:

The ghost of OLIVE THOMAS speaks to the reader, reminiscing about her life at the New Amsterdam Theatre and how she frightens the people there for fun. This launches us into the story. From her roots in Pennsylvania, Ollie escapes to New York City and takes a job as a shop girl, and later wins a beauty contest. She becomes a showgirl at the Ziegfeld Follies, and after an affair with FLO ZIEGFELD ends, she takes a trip to California where she meets actor JACK PICKFORD, the spoiled younger brother of famous actress MARY PICKFORD.

We see Ollie’s adventures filming several of her movies, including affairs with co-stars, and run-ins with rattlesnakes, policemen, and prohibitionists. She marries Jack secretly, but their marriage is fraught with fights and scandals. Olive’s 1920 film, The Flapper, is the first to use the term, and it is a precursor of real 1920s Flappers like Clara Bow. Olive’s death in Paris in 1920 became one of Hollywood’s first scandals, ensuring her legend lived on.
